About this session

An unique opportunity to learn from the best 
while empowering others in need

This masterclass is not like others we run during the year! In this session we will be working with Marta Salogni, to raise funds to support the most vulnerable people in Sri Lanka who have suffered through the economic crisis which has severly impacted their lives. The co-hosted online masterclass will be available to all musicians around the world and appropriate for people of all skill levels. There is no mandatory fee to attend the masterclass however a donation of any amount you can spare, even if it's only a dollar, is much appreciated. All proceeds from the session will be donated to the Sri Lanka Economic Crisis Response Fund to help their efforts in supporting the local community during their time of need through providing essential needs, nutritious food for children, family financial support and essential medical supplies.

What you will learn in this masterclass

If you've been recording vocals in your home studio, in a recording studio or somewhere else and want to take these to the next level to get that professional polish but are not sure how to go about it, this is the session for you! In this one hour session we will teach you about the process of creating vocal chains and some great tips and tricks which will likely be relevant to producers across the board! We will be going through:

BUILDING YOUR EARS
Basic principles relevant to all engineers and producers on what to listen for in your original takes and determining what you need to take them to the next level.
GO-TO TECHNIQUES
Go-to techniques that are often used in vocal processing around the world in pop music today and determining what is relevant to your project.
LEAD / BACKGROUND TREATMENT
Tips for processing your lead vocals and background vocals differently to ensure that each element is being effectively used and has its place in the song.

About your teacher

Marta Salogni

Marta Salogni is an Italian-born, award winning record producer, mixer and engineer working from her own Studio Zona in London. She has worked with esteemed artists such as Björk, Holly Herndon, Circuit des Yeux, Mica Levi, Sampha, M.I.A, Bon Iver, Black Midi, Animal Collective, HAAi, Ela Minus, Dreamwife, Daniel Avery amongst others.

As well as operating within the wide scenes of recorded music, she performs improvised and composed sets using tape machines as instruments, creating loops, feedback and echoes through the manipulation of both live and prepared sounds, using her collection of Revox, Ferrograph, Akai and Teac reels-to-reels.

She runs a charity called 'Free Youth Orchestra', which focuses on removing financial barriers between children and access to musical equipment, by providing instruments and free workshops run by local musicians.

Salogni’s musical background was cultivated in her native Italy, where she spent her formative years collaborating with musical acts of all styles. She started working as a live sound engineer for the local social centre Magazzino 47 and independent radio station Radio Onda D'Urto, non-profit left-wing venues and counterculture organisations for a variety of gigs, festivals and theatre productions.

They are taking an intersectional approach with a focus across four major areas, these being education, community, inclusivity and impact.
She Knows Tech, an organisation dedicated to closing the gender gap in the Music Technology industry. In response to a striking 2% of Music Producers being female, they strive to create a community built around education, empowerment, and continued learning for female-identifying technologists.
She Is The Music is a nonprofit organization with the mission to increase the number of women working in music & to develop the next generation of women in music. Programs include an all-women songwriting series, industry database of women creators and mentorship program, with more to come. Together, they are creating change for women and building an equal future for music.
