Sound Healing: What is it?

Key Takeaways

  • Sound Healing uses vibration and frequency to release stress, unlock creativity, and support overall wellbeing.

  • Research shows that sound directly impacts the nervous system and emotional health, validating ancient healing practices.

  • Musicians can intentionally use healing frequencies like 432Hz and 528Hz to connect more deeply with their listeners.

  • Practicing Sound Healing at home can be simple: humming, drumming, or mindful listening all have therapeutic effects.

  • Remote sessions are effective and accessible, as this work can reach and support you wherever you are.

Hi, I’m Fatima Teixeira, sound healer, musician, and eternal student of vibration.

My journey with Sound Healing began from a deeply personal place: the need to find calm, reconnect with myself, and move through the doubts and fears that so often come with being a creative soul.

Over time, I realised these practices weren’t just helping me. They were opening space for others, for clarity, confidence, and creative return.

As artists, we often carry silent burdens: self-doubt, creative blocks, that inner voice whispering “you’re not good enough.” Sound Healing became one of the most gentle yet powerful tools I know to quiet those voices, soften the tension, and reawaken what’s true.

In this article, I’ll share what Sound Healing really is, how it works, and why it can be a transformative practice, especially for musicians and creatives like you.

 What is Sound Healing?

At its core, Sound Healing is the intentional use of vibration, frequency, and sound to bring the body and mind into balance. This might be through instruments like crystal bowls, gongs, tuning forks, or even our own voices.

Think about how a song can instantly shift your mood, that’s sound at work. But Sound Healing goes deeper, it resonates through the nervous system, brainwaves, and subtle energy, helping you release tension, regulate your inner state, and reconnect with yourself from within.

Is Sound Healing Scientifically Proven?

Science is starting to catch up with what ancient traditions have always known: sound has a direct impact on our physiology. Research shows that sound and vibration can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and shift brainwaves into states of calm and creativity. For example, studies using EEG scans have shown how certain frequencies, like those used in Sound Healing, can shift the brain into alpha and theta states, which are linked to deep relaxation and creative flow.

For me, the evidence is in the transformation I witness every day. People come into sessions feeling anxious or blocked, and leave with more clarity, lightness, and creative flow. Science may still be “proving,” but lived experience speaks volumes.

What are the Benefits of Sound Healing?

Sound Healing offers many benefits, but for creatives, some of the most powerful include:

  • Releasing self-doubt: Sound helps us bypass the analytical mind and connect with deeper intuition.

  • Reducing stress: Vibrations calm the nervous system, making space for creativity.

  • Boosting confidence: When we feel grounded, we’re more willing to share our art.

  • Creative inspiration: Sounds spark imagination, unlocking new ideas and perspectives.

  • Emotional release: Healing sounds help move stuck emotions, clearing the way for expression.

  • Deep listening & inner space: Sound invites stillness, a space where true creative insight arises.

  • Transformational shifts: Regular practice can support emotional breakthroughs and energetic resets, helping creatives break free from old patterns or inner blocks.

For musicians, this is especially powerful. When your inner critic is quieted and your energy rebalanced, you can truly connect with your music, not just as a performer, but as a vessel for expression.

What are the 5 Healing Sounds?

Many ancient traditions, especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Qi Gong, speak of “five healing sounds,” each connected to a specific organ and emotional state. These vocal tones help regulate energy flow, release stored emotions, and restore internal harmony.

Each sound is practiced with breath and intention, allowing the vibration to resonate through the body and shift energy gently from within.

Here are the five traditional healing sounds:

  • “Sss” – connects with the lungs, clearing grief and sadness.

  • “Who” – resonates with the kidneys, releasing fear.

  • “Shhh” – supports the liver, helping to release anger.

  • “Hoo” – works with the heart, easing impatience.

  • “Hee” – connects with the spleen, softening worry or overthinking.

These sounds may seem simple, but when practiced with awareness and deep breath, they can create profound emotional release, mental clarity, and a sense of calm embodiment. It’s not so much about singing, but about vibrating emotion into flow. Some people experience subtle shifts, others deep tears or physical sensations. Let whatever arises move through you.

What are the Frequencies for Sound Healing?

Certain frequencies are believed to support different emotional and energetic states. For example:

  • 528 Hz: known as the “love frequency”, often linked to emotional healing, heart expansion, and cellular regeneration.396 Hz: supports the release of fear and guilt, helping the body feel safe and grounded.

  • 639 Hz: promotes connection, empathy, and harmony in relationships — with others and within.

  • 741 Hz: is said to support intuition and inner clarity, helping to detoxify energetic blocks.

  • 852 Hz: associated with spiritual connection and higher consciousness, often used for meditation and visioning.

These tones are often part of the Solfeggio frequency system, a scale used in ancient chant traditions and modern sound healing.

When I work with frequencies, I don’t treat them as “magic numbers” but as tools that interact with the body’s natural rhythms. Sound is not just heard, but it’s received. And healing begins when we let ourselves be touched by it.

432 Hz vs 440 Hz

One of the most common questions I hear is: What’s the difference between 432 Hz and 440 Hz?

440 Hz is the current global tuning standard for most modern instruments. It’s bright, direct, and widely used in commercial music.

432 Hz, on the other hand, is often described as more organic, harmonious, and emotionally resonant, said to align with natural patterns found in the body, the Earth, and ancient instruments.

Personally, I resonate deeply with 432 Hz. It feels softer, warmer, and more heart-centered, and I’ve been composing most of my recent work in this tuning There’s a quality to it that invites presence, stillness, and a deeper listening. It’s less about performance, and more about connection.

This doesn’t mean one is “better” than the other, but rather that each frequency carries a different feeling, and that feeling matters.

My suggestion is simple: try both. Listen closely. Notice how your body responds. The right frequency is the one that brings you closer to yourself.

How Can I Practice Sound Healing at Home?

You don’t need a perfect setting to begin. Sound Healing can start in very simple ways, the ones that gently bring you back into your body, your breath, your inner rhythm.

  • Hum or sing softly: your voice is a sacred instrument, and even a single sustained tone can shift your energy.

  • Listen with presence: choose a song, close your eyes, and notice how it moves through you.

  • Play with rhythm: light drumming, clapping, or tapping can regulate your system and create inner coherence.

  • Explore what you have: bowls, chimes, or any resonant object can become medicine when played with intention.

Practice your listening, truly listening, to what your body, your heart, and your energy are asking for. Let sound be a companion.

Does Sound Healing Work Remotely?

I’ve worked with people all over the world through online sessions, and the shifts can be just as deep, sometimes even more so.

Sound carries energy. And even through headphones or speakers, the vibration finds its way into your body, your breath, your energetic field.

Many of the creatives I work with say that remote sessions allow them to relax more fully, simply because they’re in their own space, surrounded by what’s familiar, safe, and supportive.

You don’t need to be in a special place to receive Sound Healing.
You just need to be open.

Because sound is vibration.
And vibration travels, just like a phone call can reach you across the world, so can healing.

Whether you're in a quiet room, a busy city, or somewhere in between, the energy meets you where you are.

All it asks… is that you listen.
